Daly Gem: Are You A Pathological Giver?

There’s something to be said for reciprocity.

I had a mentor once who was shocked at my inability to ask and receive. In fact, her comment was “Meg… it’s kind of weird the way you don’t ask for anything in return. It’s almost pathological.”

Wowza.

After I let the sting subside, I realized she had a point. Maybe it was a sense of feeling unworthy, or my starring role in being a people pleaser. I’m not sure. What I do know now years later is there is this delicate dance between giving with an open heart without expectations but also balancing it with healthy reciprocity.

What I found is the remedy to moving away from imbalance is checking our intentions with the simple questions of:

Am I giving what I don’t have?

OR

Am I asking for someone else to give what is mine to create within myself?

[ctt template=”5″ link=”88fTe” via=”no” ]When we enter into work and personal relationships with the energy of an open heart as well as the intention for things to be balanced with reciprocity, it’s a beautiful thing.[/ctt]

Where do we offer up ourselves or extend our resources with the sole purpose of “getting?”
On the flip side, where are we agreeing to give/give/give without any replenishment of our own energy?
Both scenarios are draining!

So I guess the key is to check our intentions.

▪ Am I saying yes with a clean desire?
▪ Am I asking for something from someone else in the form of a clean request?
Coming from a former pathological giver… that sounds good to me!

Have a great weekend,

Meg
